Could you join us in making a difference for the most seriously ill and injured patients at our hospitals?
Critical care units (CCUs) can sometimes be known as Intensive Care Units (ICUs) or Intensive Therapy Units (ITUs). These are specialist hospital wards designed to treat patients who are seriously ill and require continuous monitoring. These patients might suffer with one or more vital organ failure or are unable to breathe without support.
When a loved one is recovering from a critical illness, they miss out on knowing what care they have been given and what has been happening in the lives of their nearest and dearest. The diaries, which are left by the patient's bedside, give visitors an opportunity to leave messages and allow staff to keep a record of their treatment.
The room is there to provide an area where family members can have a break but still be close by to their loved one in hospital. The room now has new comfortable seating and murals on the wall.
Delirium is a common phenomenon in critically ill patients and affects patient’s short-term and long-term outcomes adversely. A patients recovering from critical illness have complex rehabilitation needs. RITA has been proven to assist in the rehabilitation of patients both physically and psychologically. The device can be used by staff and family members to provide therapy, stimulation an entertainment.
One of our youngest fundraisers, Dominic Barker, five-year-old Dominic completed a three-mile sponsored walk on Father’s Day last year in memory of his dad, James Barker.
James was cared for at both Queen’s and King George hospitals, spending eight weeks as an inpatient before he sadly passed away early 2023 at the young age of 39. In honour of his dad and the exceptional staff who looked after him, Dominic took up the fundraising challenge to help other patients and families in our hospitals during difficult times.
Dominic, who wore his dad’s favourite cap on the walk, wanted to raise money for our hospitals, to thank the staff who cared for James. Dominic hoped to raise around £150 but thanks to generous support, raised over £2,600! Dominic completed the walk in just thirty minutes and was joined by family and friends who cheered him on the whole way.
"I’m so proud of Dom for what he’s achieved – I know James would be proud too."
- Dominic’s mum and James’ wife Emma Barker
Funds raised will be used to make a real difference to patients, staff, and families in ITU by funding projects that go over and above NHS funding to further enhance the hospital experience for all.
Our charity is amazed by Dominic’s courage, and we admire him for all his hard work. Massive thanks to everyone who has supported Dominic throughout his fundraising journey.
