In January 2023, Vicky Merry noticed a lump in her right breast and took the important step of getting it examined. By February, after a visit to a one-stop clinic, she faced the heartbreaking news of a breast cancer diagnosis.
Her treatment journey began with surgery at King George's Hospital, followed by 20 weeks of chemotherapy and 9 sessions of radiotherapy on her right breast. The rest of her treatment was carried out at Queen's Hospital, where she was recommended to take Tamoxifen for ten years.
Throughout her treatment, Vicky was cared for by an amazing team at both hospitals. She formed friendships with the nurses in the Sunflower unit and connected with other patients.
Eager to give back to the hospitals that supported her, Vicky was unsure how to contribute. After receiving her first all-clear from cancer in March 2024, she decided to host a charity disco night to celebrate being cancer-free. The event took place on Saturday 28 September, and raised an impressive £2,557.50!
Vicky said: "Thank you will never enough for the care and treatment I got but this seems a fitting way to be able to give something back."
Last week, Vicky visited the Sunflower Suite at Queen’s Hospital where she was able to see the staff who looked after her and present her fundraising total. We’d like to say a huge thanks to Vicky for putting on this fundraiser and raising funds to support oncology departments at both hospitals.
